Power and the Land

Join us for a "May Movie Night"...We will enjoy the historic short film "Power and the Land", followed by a "Making of" documentary on how the film was produced by the Rural Electrification Administration, if time permits.

The story follows The Parkinsons, a farm family living in the St. Clairsville, Ohio area, as their farm is electrified.

The Parkinsons

The goal of the film was to help convince rural Americans to join the movement toward rural electrification in the United States, one of FDR's many New Deal programs.

Filmed in 1939 near St. Clairsville, OH by the United States Film Service for the Rural Electrification Administration, "Power and the Land" was released in 1940. The 38-minute-long film was filmed under the direction of documentary film makers Pare Lorentz and Joris Ivens. The script was written by Steven Vincent Benet with the score by Douglas Moore.

Once again, we'll be meeting at our new home at 408 Main Street. Renovations continue, but the meeting room is open and new chairs have been purchased. We are still taking donations toward the purchase of chairs, so see the treasurer at the May meeting to contribute to the project.

We will enjoy popcorn and cold drinks while we watch the movie. :)

About Our Historical Society

Ye Olde Sulphur Spa Historical Society works to encourage the study of the historical and cultural aspects of both York Springs and Adams County, Pennsylvania and to collect and preserve existing records and artifacts.

Our Historical Society is named for the famous York Sulphur Springs, which enjoyed a good reputation among the residents of Baltimore and Philadelphia during the 1800’s for its health-restoring properties. The York Sulphur Springs was the first summer resort in Adams County, and remained popular until the advent of the railroad made the Atlantic Beach resorts more attractive destinations. Daily stages ran from both Baltimore and Philadelphia to York Springs.

YOSSHS Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. (except for July, August, December, & January) at the Society's Headquarters at 408 Main Street, York Springs. Our building is handicapped-accessible and there is ample parking behind the building. Entrance is at the rear from the upper level.

We have a diverse membership, which includes long-time residents as well as newcomers to our community who are interested in local history and its preservation.

We invite you to visit one of our meetings to learn about our society and the history of both York Springs and Adams County. We hope you will find our gatherings interesting and we welcome your membership!
