Twelfth Night is a traditional celebration to mark the end of the Christmas Season. In 567 A.D., the Council of Tours established the Christmas Season as the time from Christmas, December 25 to the Feast of Epiphany, January 6; thus, the Twelve Days of Christmas.
During the traditional celebrations, the King’s cake, into which a bean and a pea have been baked, was cut and served to the guests. The male who received the piece containing the bean was crowned the king. The female who received the piece of cake containing the pea was crowned the queen. After the coronation, they reigned over the rest of the evening’s festivities. These festivities included games, dancing and singing.
